Still, that first season is such a remarkable piece of cyberpunk that it's hard to deny its place as a bonafide classic of the genre regardless of what came after.Ĭonsidered by some to have one of the best English dubs of all time, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (often abbreviated to GitS SAC) is set in a dismal world where a group called Public Security Section 9 is tasked with keeping the peace in Japan. The first season of Psycho-Pass is generally considered much better than the second, to the point where some fans would encourage newbies to the series to avoid the second season altogether. As Akane and her team investigate new crimes and cold cases, one name keeps popping up-that of a man who can't be evaluated by Sybil, and thus has free rein to cause chaos. In this dark future, Akane Tsunemori, a fresh-faced police inspector, is placed in charge of a team of criminals known as Enforcers, who are forced to perform violent acts because they're already seen as tainted. The end result is a series full of fascinating ideas and a compelling mystery that can be rather opaque at times, but it's absolutely worth the effort.Ī more modern take on cyberpunk, Psycho-Pass sees a world where people are constantly scored by an AI known as Sybil based on their mental stability, and anything that can cause extreme emotions is seen as bad, meaning that victims of crimes are often exterminated along with the criminals in the name of maintaining peace. Serial Experiments Lain was intended to be difficult to understand, with its creator hoping it would be interpreted differently in Japan and abroad. It's almost more of a psychological horror series, which touches on bizarre and esoteric subjects like UFO conspiracies. Things only get weirder from there, as Lain dives into the Wired and learns that some pretty bizarre stuff has already been going on, including the appearance of a "God" of the Wired. Lain, a young girl who isn't familiar with technology, goes to school one day to find out that one of her classmates has killed herself, and now people are receiving emails from her after her death, inviting them to join her in "The Wired," their version of the internet. If one prefers something a little heavier on the "Cyber," there's Serial Experiments Lain, a show that is absolutely not what it appears at first glance.
